Happy Veterans Day from the Amistad Research Center

November 11, 2016

Many thanks to all of our nation's veterans for their service. Today we share an excerpt from  a 2001 panel discussion with World War II veterans Nolan Marshall, Ora P. Hicks, Calvin Moret, Leonard Burns, and Felix James. Their panel, sponsored by the Amistad Research Center, highlighted the experiences of African Americans in World War II. The participants discuss their views and recollections on race and racism in the armed forces, their military positions, relationships with commanding officers and other soldiers (black and white), their overseas experiences among Europeans, professions after the war, and how their service affected their families. To view the full panel, see the Double Victory collection at Amistad.
