RESEARCHING AT AMISTAD
The Amistad Research Center is currently following guidelines issued by the CDC, state of Louisiana, City of New Orleans and our host institution, Tulane University, regarding social distancing, personal protective equipment and other pandemic protocols. Research visits are currently by appointment only and can be arranged by contacting the Research Services department at email@example.com or (504) 862-3222. Visits by Tulane University affiliates (students, staff, faculty) require 48-hour notice. Non-Tulane affiliates must read and complete the Tulane Visitor Policy and complete the Visitor Acknowledgment Form under the “Suppliers, contractors, and vendors” heading here prior to visiting the Amistad Research Center; those research appointments require a one-week notice.
Amistad is a closed-stack, non-circulating research facility. Therefore, all visiting researchers are required to provide a valid photo ID and complete a Researcher Registration Form when they arrive. As some collections are not yet accessible or are stored at an off-site facility, researchers are encouraged to contact the Research Services staff prior to visiting the Center in order to communicate their research needs. The Research Services department may be contacted at or (504) 862-3222.
The Research Services department provides reference assistance both in person and from a distance. We cannot undertake extensive research due to our limited staffing; however, we will provide information on the scope and subject of our holdings. The time it takes to complete a reference request depends upon the volume and complexity of the requests we receive, as well as the nature of each relevant collection.
The Amistad Staff replies to requests in the order received, regardless of whether it is via telephone, letter or e-mail. We strive to complete each request within seven days.
Copyright law of the United States (Title 17, US Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” Researchers interested in requesting reproductions of material from Amistad’s archival and printed collections should familiarize themselves with and use policies and forms listed below. Questions regarding duplication of material should be addressed to Research Services staff.
REPRODUCTIONS & PERMISSIONS
Applications for use and licensing of digital files derived from the collections of Amistad may be requested by making written application to the Head of Research Services, using the following form:
Except for those materials still under copyright and a select number of archival collections, there is no fee for the use of quotations or for citing materials from the collection. However, the Application for Use and License form must still be completed. Amistad maintains a policy to charge a licensing fee for the publication of each original image derived from its collections. Such fees are separate from all reproduction costs. Fees for the publication of a large number of items may be negotiated.
In addition, application to quote from works by Countée Cullen may be requested using the following form: Application for Use for Works by Countée Cullen. While copyright to Cullen’s works is held by the Amistad Research Center, the licensing is administered by an independent third party. Therefore, those interested in quoting or reprinting the works of Cullen are encouraged to submit their applications in a timely manner.
Amistad's Preferred Citation Format is below. This format can be adapted to a variety of style guides.
