TOUSSAINT L'OUVERTURE

One of the most important holdings in the Amistad collection is Jacob Lawrence's Toussaint L'Ouverture series, comprised of 41 paintings completed in 1938. Documenting the life of the Haitian Revolutionary, the paintings were executed in tempera and measure 11 x 19 inches.

Selections from the Toussaint L'Ouverture Series Limited Edition Silkscreen Prints

During the mid 1980s and 1990s, Jacob Lawrence produced a number of limited edition serigraphs (silkscreen prints) from fifteen of the original painting from the Toussaint L'Ouverture series. Serigraphs are produced when an artist designs, creates and prints his own stencils to produce a fine, textured print.

The Toussaint L'Ouverture series is particularly significant because Mr. Lawrence actively reworked many of the images in translating then to silkscreen. By altering and incorporating additional colors and forms, the artist heightened the dramatic impact of these important images.

JACOB LAWRENCE

In the 1990's Mr. Lawrence ended serigraph production from the Toussaint series. The Amistad Research Center, however, has a limited number of silkscreen prints available for purchase. Please visit the Amistad Gallery 9am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday to view this stunning collection.

Whether held in private collections, businesses, or museums, these prints provide access to an imortant peice of Afrian American cultural history.

You can view the available serigraphs and even order directly from our website at our Gift Shop.
