Biographical Note
Reverend Dr. James Hester Hargett, community advocate and civil rights activist, spent over forty years as a United Church of Christ pastor in churches located in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, and New York. His ministry focused on the recruitment of African Americans in Christian service and activities in the areas of community advocacy, education, human relations, mental health, and social justice.
Hargett was born on July 24, 1930, in Greensboro, North Carolina, the son of Afro-Christian pastor Reverend Frederick A. Hargett and Florence Hester. He received a bachelor's degree from Johnson C. Smith University (1952), a master's degree from Yale Divinity School (1955), and a Doctor of Ministry (1975) from Colgate-Rochester Seminary. His studies at Colgate-Rochester Seminary involved work with the peoples of Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, Haiti, and the sea islands of South Carolina. He was ordained to ministry of the Congregational Church in 1955, and served as an associate minister of the predominately Japanese American Church of the Crossroads United Church of Christ (UCC) in Honolulu from 1955 to 1958. He was the first African American minister called to serve a Protestant-established church in Hawaii.
In 1958, he accepted the call to serve as minister of the Congregational Church of Christian Fellowship in Los Angeles, California, where he built the church membership and actively participated in the civil rights movement. He marched from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and served as his west coast convener of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). After King's assassination, Hargett organized a star-studded fund raising event in Hollywood, which raised $450,000 for the SCLC. During his eleven years of ministry in Los Angeles, Hargett also helped develop the Central City Community Mental Health Clinic for the poor; the Transport-A-Child program, which provided transportation for students in overcrowded schools; and the Project Open Future program focused on academic enrichment for minority students.
In 1969, Hargett moved to New York to become the Secretary for Black Ministries of the United Church of Christ. For five years, he recruited, educated, and placed African American ministers in national and international positions with United Church of Christ churches. He worked closely with Vanderbilt and Duke Divinity Schools in the development of curriculum addressing the concerns and needs of African American seminarians. He also conducted a study on the financial needs of Black churches in the United Church of Christ. In 1975, he accepted the call as co-pastor at the Livingston Avenue United Church of Christ in New Brunswick, New Jersey, a predominately German American church, for eighteen months.
In 1977, he was called to serve as senior minster at the Congregational Church of Park Manor in Chicago, Illinois. In this position, Hargett was responsible for guiding a large and affluent African American church towards administering to the needs of the minority community. He was on the board of directors for the "One Church, One Child" program, which promoted African American adoptions with the help of local churches, as well as on the board of the Evangelical Health Systems (1977-1986). He also served as president of the Friends of Chicago Public Library (1982-1983).
After nine years in Chicago, Hargett moved to San Diego, California, in 1986 to serve as minister of the Christian Fellowship Congregational Church, UCC where he remained until retiring in 1997. In San Diego, his ministry focused on "empowering the African American constituency of the United Church of Christ to engage in their own missionary efforts." He started the Children's Care Center and brought the "One Child, One Church" program to San Diego. He also taught at California State College-Northridge, Douglas College, and Rutgers University. He served as a trustee of Johnson C. Smith University, a member of the Yale Divinity School Alumni Council, on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Urban League, and the Advisory Board of the Sickle-Cell Anemia Foundation.
Rev. Dr. Hargett married Dr. Louilyn Funderburk in 1954. The couple has three children, Meloni, Darryl, and Hester.

Hargett's New York and New Jersey ministry focused on the needs of transitional communities, as well as the promotion of minorities into Christian service. He served as Secretary for Black Ministries for the Council and Ministry of the United Church of Christ (1969-1974), which focused on the recruitment, education and placement of African American ministers in national and international positions. Articles and news clippings concerning speaking engagements as the Secretary for Black Ministries, programs implemented by the Black Ministries (1970), articles by Hargett about the Black Caucus (1970), and racial justice (1971) are included.
The major themes of the correspondence (1969-1977) are Hargetts' move to New York (1969), speaking engagements, the training for pastors of churches in transitional neighborhoods, and race relations within the church, as well as between ministers. Communication (1972) with UCC colleagues concerning his proposal of a four-year dual degree student-minister placement in the Southern Conference of the UCC is also included. Of particular note are a letter of thanks from the President of Zambia, which discusses apartheid and Christianity (1971); Hargett's letter to Emilio Garrastazu, president of Brazil, concerning race relations in Brazil as compared to race relations in the United States (1972); and a letter from Hargett to President Richard Nixon regarding Watergate (1973).
Undated essays written by Hargett about the development of a multi-racial church and ministerial recruitment committee, African American religious experiences, and the diversity of the African American experience are included. Of particular note is his essay, "The Mustard Seed of Manumission," which was "a stream of consciousness engaged as he traveled from Los Angeles to New York to begin his new ministry." Proposals and reports written while Hargett was Secretary for Black Ministries include plans aimed towards diversifying the UCC, and educating and assisting African American and other minority communities. Hargett also served as director of the Black Church Empowerment Emphasis (1973-1974), where he designed a program set to meet the specialized needs of the local Black United Church of Christ constituency and the Black community. Directories, minutes, programs, and reports from the Black Church Empowerment program are contained in this series. In 1973, Hargett entered the Martin Luther King Jr. Fellows program hosted by the Colgate-Rochester Divinity School. The fellowship allowed for travel to study religion in Africa, the Caribbean, and the southern United States for three years. At the culmination of the program, Hargett was awarded his doctorate of ministry. Of particular note are articles and news clippings published about the fellowship program and the African Study Tour (1972), as well as clippings and programs on the receipt of his doctorate (1975).
In June of 1974, Hargett's position as Secretary for Black Ministries ended, which resulted in his new position as co-pastor of Livingston Avenue United Church of Christ in New Brunswick, New Jersey for eighteen months. Correspondence (1974-1977) includes communications with other UCC ministers in the New Jersey Conference, as well as speaking engagement requests. The papers also include an invitation to a celebratory tea in honor of the Hargett's new ministry in New Jersey, an expenditures report (1976); a minister's report (1977); a Johnson C. Smith University 7th Annual Recognition Luncheon souvenir program (1977) where Hargett was keynote speaker; and a copy of "The Livingston Avenue United Church of Church: A Review," which includes detailed information about the community, church, mission, and pastor. Obituaries for his parents, Rev.
