Scope and Contents: This collection reflects Maida Springer Kemp's activities from the late 1940s onward. The collection includes ample correspondence, photographs, collected publications and ephemera, and other materials generated in Springer-Kemp's over forty years as an American and African labor activist. A considerable amount of materials document her extensive travels throughout Africa to lend her technical assistance to emerging black trade unions as well as her assistance in starting a school in Kenya for female garment workers. Of particular note is a photograph of Jomo Kenyatta and Tom Mboya upon Kenyatta's release from prison.
